Connecting with Plants and People

We love this work.  We love being out in the hot sun for days at a time, only the farm crew, the flowers and the insects.  But if that was all our farm was, it wouldn’t be sustainable.  What we love about this work is that we get to do all the farm work that we love to do AND we get to bring it to you!  We love connecting with people and building community through these plants.  We love bringing herbs to events, we love the smiles that we see when we walk in with buckets of flowers.

We urge you to be in touch if you are doing community work and want to collaborate with our farm. We joyfully honor as many requests as we can, so please, let us bring some Cutting Root magic to your next community event.  Email is always best- michelle@cuttingroot.com

About Michelle:

Hi everyone!

I am a fashion forward herbalist, educator, gardener, dog lover, and community organizer. I love being connected to plants, to be outside under the hot sun and open skies, to hike in our Appalachian woods and I try my hardest to care for this land as it cares for me.

My dream for Cutting Root is to matchmake people and plants. This might mean you enjoy our beautiful flowers in a bouquet, or you transplant a beloved into your own garden, or you find relief in one of our teas or extracts.  I want to not only create access to these plants- I want to revel in the abundance that we create when we steward spaces and create connection.  To me, being an herbalist means encouraging community care and building connection to the natural world.  I practice and teach with the Stonefruit Community Herbalists in Pittsburgh, PA and the Stone Cabin Collective in Black Mesa, AZ.

Besides being inspired and taught by the plants themselves, this is a list of some of the incredible mentors in my life who helped me arrive at Cutting Root Farm.

• Felicia Lane Savage Friedman, Yoga Roots on Location, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
• Phyllis D. Light, Appalachian Center for Natural Life, Arab, Alabama
• Caroline Gagnon, Flora Medicina, Quebec, Canada
• Misha Cohen, Chicken Soup Chinese Medicine, San Francisco, California
• Lisa Ganora, Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism, Boulder, Colorado
• Darcey Blue, Shamana Flora, Tucson, Arizona
• 7Song, Northeast School of Botanical Medicine, Ithaca, New York
